Nano Brows vs. Powder Brows vs. Combo Brows: Which Is Right for You?
If you’ve been researching permanent brows, you’ve probably come across terms like nano brows, powder brows, ombré brows, combo brows, and microblading — and it can get confusing quickly.
The truth is, there isn’t one brow technique that is best for everyone.

What Are Nano Brows?
Nano brows are created with a tattoo machine and an ultra-fine needle to mimic the appearance of natural brow hairs.
The goal is not to create a perfectly uniform pattern. Well-done nano brows should blend into your existing brow hair and follow the natural direction, density, and movement of your brows.
Nano brows are a great option if you want a soft, realistic result that looks like actual hair rather than makeup.
They can work beautifully for clients who:
● Want the most natural-looking brow possible
● Have sparse areas or gaps
● Want more definition without a filled-in appearance
● Have previously considered microblading but want a machine-based technique
● Prefer a softer, more modern result

What Are Powder Brows?
Powder brows create a soft, shaded effect throughout the brow.
Instead of individual hairstrokes, tiny pixels of pigment are layered into the skin to create a diffused finish. Depending on how they are designed, powder brows can range from very soft and airy to more defined.
Think of the look you get from gently filling your brows with powder or a soft brow pencil — but much more seamless.
Powder brows may be a better choice if you:
● Prefer a more polished or defined brow
● Normally fill your brows in every day
● Have oily skin
● Have limited natural brow hair
● Want a result that holds its shape clearly
Powder brows do not have to look heavy. The technique can be kept incredibly soft.
What Are Combo Brows?
Combo brows combine nano hairstrokes with soft shading.
Typically, hairstrokes are used in areas where they add realism and dimension, while light shading provides additional density and definition.
This is often a beautiful option for clients who love the natural look of nano brows but need a little more coverage than hairstrokes alone can provide.
Combo brows may be ideal if you:
● Have areas with very little natural hair
● Want a realistic brow with slightly more definition
● Like the look of hairstrokes but still want the brow to appear fuller
● Need help blending old permanent makeup
The exact balance between hairstrokes and shading is customized for each client.
Nano Brows vs. Powder Brows: Which Lasts Better?
There isn’t a simple answer because retention varies from person to person.
Your skin type, skincare routine, sun exposure, medications, lifestyle, and previous permanent makeup can all affect how pigment heals and fades.
Someone with dry or normal skin may retain delicate hairstrokes very well, while someone with oily skin may benefit from some soft shading for better long-term definition.
This is one reason I don’t recommend choosing your technique based solely on photos you’ve saved online.
Your skin matters.
What If I Already Have Permanent Makeup?
Previous permanent makeup can significantly influence what we can do.
If your existing pigment is very dark, saturated, discolored, or positioned outside the shape we want to create, removal or additional fading may be necessary before new work can be performed.
Nano hairstrokes in particular need enough clean skin around them to remain visible.
Trying to layer delicate strokes over heavily saturated pigment usually defeats the purpose of choosing nano brows in the first place.
If you have previous brow tattooing, I require photos before booking so I can evaluate what we’re working with.
Why I Don’t Offer Microblading
Microblading and nano brows can produce a similar visual effect, but the way the pigment is placed into the skin is different.
Microblading uses a manual blade to create small cuts in the skin.
Nano brows are performed with a tattoo machine and a very fine needle.
I prefer machine hairstrokes because they allow me to create incredibly fine, controlled strokes while adapting the technique to the client’s skin.
My focus is always on creating beautiful brows while also respecting the integrity of the skin.
Your Natural Brows Matter More Than the Trend
One of the biggest mistakes in permanent makeup is choosing a technique because it looks beautiful on someone else.
Your brows are unique.
Your natural hair growth, facial structure, skin type, previous permanent makeup, and personal style all influence what will look best on you.
Some clients need mostly hairstrokes.
Others benefit from soft shading.
And some need a thoughtful combination of both.
That decision is part of the design process.
